Adam and Josh sat down with Kevin Marks from Google. We chatted about Microformats, Open Social, The social graph api, etc.
shownotes
- Kevin Marks has been involved with Microformats and Google’s OpenSocial
- We launched our handcrafted website (just one page for now)
- We are thinking of moving to weekly podcasts, tell us what you think
- Kevin is a Developer Advocate at Google, focusing on OpenSocial and Social Graphs
- Kevin helped found Microformats
- The Social Graph API is built on top of XFN
- Brad Fitzpatrick has been working on XFN and Social Graph crawling
- Open Social is an API to access people and friending information
- OAuth is not the same as OpenSocial, OpenSocial even uses part of OAuth
- Large XFN supports: Twitter, Flickr, Pownce, and LiveJournal
- Microformats because infinitely more usable once the browsers specifically use them
- If you want to start a microformat, check out their process
- Starting a microformat means you need to gather alot of examples of markup and then find the 80% commonality
- HRecipe has been started already, just never finished
- Parts of the Social Graph API are open source
- Open Social implementers: Orkut, “MySpace”http://myspace.com, and Hi5
- Shindig is an open source Open Social container
- Using the Open Social API is a way to avoid reinventing the wheel and forcing users to “re-friend” for every social network site
- Kevin isn’t sure how big the Open Social team is, because it is a community project (they had over 100 people at a container meeting)
